For first-time guests

New to a Kuhingira?

A short guide for friends joining us for the first time.

Ebyanzi milk pots and gourds
What is a Kuhingira?

It is the traditional ceremony where the bride's family formally gives their daughter to the groom's family, in the presence of relatives and friends.

Who are the Abakwe?

The in-laws: the groom's family and the guests who come with them. They are received with honour and seated together.

Why the milk pots and cattle?

Ebyanzi (milk pots) and the long-horned Ankole cattle are at the heart of Banyankole heritage. They stand for care, wealth and the home the bride is going to build.

Should I bring a gift?

Gifts are welcome during the speeches and gifts. Many guests also contribute ahead of the day; see Contributions below.
